Influenced by Indian classical music with a modern touch, 'Bawri Piya Ki' is one of those gems where you cannot decide which is better – the haunting ethereal music or Sonu's soft sensuous voice. Aadesh Shrivastava does a brilliant job in arranging this composition and uses Sonu for both lead and background vocals. The result is mind-blowing.
Many reviewers at the time single out Bawri Piya Ki as the highlight of Baabul’s soundtrack – an exquisite fusion of Indian classical phrasing with contemporary texture. As Gulf News notes in its 2006 review: “an Indian classical composition, and Nigam is simply superb in his measured rendition.”
What makes the composition truly memorable is Aadesh Shrivastava’s restraint – he keeps the arrangement minimal, allowing Sonu’s voice to breathe and carry the emotional core. The silences, the pauses, the gentle swell of strings, all magnifying the ache in his voice.
In the film, the song is picturised on Rani Mukerji and Salman Khan — two characters caught between love, loss, and unspoken emotion. The film itself explores themes of grief and renewal, which adds another layer to Sonu’s rendition – his voice becomes the sound of yearning itself.
So pleased is Sonu after hearing the recording of the song that he returns the pay cheque to Ravi Chopra, the director of the movie and takes just 101 rupees as shagun. He explains to a baffled Ravi that he cannot give him a good song like this one and also pay him for it.
This is what Sonu says about the song, a few days after the recording - “There will always be ups and downs... Like the stage collapsed in Kabul when I performed recently. But for every Kabul there is Babul... I sang a song recently for a film of this name. And I was moved beyond measure. If I get a song like that I am willing to pay the music director instead of vice versa.”
Though Baabul itself does not go on to become a blockbuster, this song continues to be cherished as one of Aadesh Shrivastava’s most evocative creations and a shining example of Sonu’s ability to inhabit a melody, not merely sing it.
