19th July 2017. A lovely summer’s day. Sunny. No rain for a change. An azure sky, not a cloud in sight. We are seated outside Starbucks. To my left sit three ardent Sonu Nigam fans. And to my right – the man himself. Yes, you read that right. The one and only Sonu Nigam.
The others have met him several times before and are speaking to him as though they hang out every other week. I simply nod and grin, slightly nervous. During a lull in their conversation, Sonu turns to me.
“So you’re Hansa?”
I nod.
Within seconds, the four of them are engaged in wordplay, teasing me with my own name. Sonu smiles and says, “Hansa, hasna” (Hansa laugh).
Pat comes Vijay’s line – “Hansa mat pagli.” I can almost see a bulb light up over his head.
Sonu grins and begins singing, “Hansa mat pagli, pyaar ho jayega,” playfully twisting the lyric using my name. 'Hans Mat Pagli' is his latest Bollywood hit, released barely two weeks earlier. And just like that, it becomes an affectionate running joke.
The following year, I am seated in the front row at his concert. Sonu is moving up and down the stage, singing ‘Hans Mat Pagli.’ Suddenly, when he is directly in front of me, he pauses, points in my direction, sings the next couple of lines… then points at me again. He sings “hans,” laughs, and continues with the song.

And that, exactly, is the spirit of ‘Hans Mat Pagli’ – teasing, affectionate, playful.
It is a duet sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. As always, their voices blend and complement each other beautifully. The result is a light-hearted romantic number that feels effortless and charming.
The composition carries a distinct rustic North Indian flavour, in keeping with the film’s setting. Vickey Prasad leans into folk-inspired rhythms and simple melodic phrasing rather than heavy orchestration. The music feels unpretentious and rooted, allowing the teasing lyrics to shine. It mirrors small-town courtship, where flirtation often arrives wrapped in humour rather than bold confession.

Akshay Kumar, who plays the male lead in the film, shares how the hook line found its way into the song: “Once during the shoot, I was travelling by road with the film’s writer Siddharth Garima, when I noticed that the truck ahead had the line hans mat pagli pyaar ho jayega. I felt that it went with the milieu of our film and asked the writers if they could pen the lyrics with this hook line.”
Bhumi Pednekar, adds, “By the time we finished shooting this song, the villagers had taken to it. There’s a certain innocent flirtiness to the lyrics, which you instantly connect with when you listen to the song. It also shows how romance in small towns and many cities begin.”
What makes ‘Hans Mat Pagli’ special is its simplicity. There is no grand declaration, no dramatic confession. Just a playful warning disguised as advice – don’t laugh too much, I might fall in love. The melody carries a gentle folk lilt, the lyrics feel lifted straight from everyday life, and Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal infuse it with warmth rather than intensity. It captures that first spark of attraction in small towns, where teasing often precedes romance.
For me, the song will always hold an extra layer of memory – a summer afternoon in London, a little wordplay over coffee, and a moment on stage when the joke returns, a year later, wrapped in music.
And perhaps that is what music does best. It takes an ordinary line painted on the back of a truck, turns it into a song, and then quietly weaves itself into personal moments we never forget.
