Album: Icchapurti Gayatri Mantra
Not every offering of Sonu Nigam comes wrapped in melody and emotion. Some are quieter, more personal, and meant not to be heard, but absorbed.
This album is a compilation of twenty-four Gayatri mantras found in the Rigveda. The various mantras are an entreaty to the Almighty to fulfil an individual's wishes, like passing an exam, performing well at work or acquiring wealth. Speaking about it, Sonu says – "I like to experiment with different music genres. I have done romantic songs, bhajans, classical, semi-classical but had not ventured into mantra space."

And that difference shows. There is no attempt to impress here, no flourish to linger on. Sonu’s voice simply becomes a medium, steady, unassuming, and deeply sincere.
As for the concept behind the making of this album, Sonu explains that on looking back, he can recall how, as a child, every morning he'd take a shower, quickly say his prayers, do aarti and rush off to school. So this is an album that a person can listen to, even while getting on with one's daily tasks, whether it be studying, cooking, getting dressed and thus, continue to be in a prayerful mode.
It is this simplicity that makes the album slip so easily into everyday life. Not as a ritual to be performed, but as a quiet presence in the background, gently anchoring the mind.
'Sukh Samriddhi Prapti Gayatri Mantra' is an invocation to Ganesh, Vishnu, Lakshmi and Sita. 'Arogya Prapti Gayatri Mantra' is a prayer to Shiva, Brahma, Rahu and Ketu. 'Sarv Vijay Sarvprapti Gayatri Mantra' is an entreaty to Gauri, Krishna, Hanuman and Surya. 'Prem Aur Kul Ka Samman Prapti Gayatri Mantra' is for Ram, Radha, Soma, Chandra devta and Buddha. 'Vidya Buddhi Prapti Gayatri Mantra' is an incantation to Parmeshwar, Saraswati, Brahaspati and Shukra. 'Raksha Kalyan Shanti Prapti Gayatri Mantra' is an invocation to Durga, Kali, Mangal and Shani.
What makes the album unique is that while the prayers or the mantras are in Sanskrit, the desires have been explained in Hindi. Thus, even the common man can understand the meaning as well as the relevance of these mantras.
The video of Icchapurti Gayatri Mantra is shot in Ladakh. Another unique feature of the album is that there are kids singing the songs, alongside Sonu. By doing so, Sonu tries to reach the new generation, something no one has tried to do before.
And what makes this endeavour even more special is that all the proceeds from the sale of the album are spent on the education of underprivileged children and those with special needs.
Perhaps that is what stays with you long after the album ends, not just the prayers, but the intent behind them, quiet, generous, and deeply human.
