'Kal Ho Naa Ho’ is not the kind of track you simply listen to. It is the kind you feel. It arrives softly, almost like a whisper, and before you know it, it has wrapped itself around your thoughts, your memories, your fears… and your hopes.
Every time it plays, it asks you a question you didn’t realise you were avoiding – what if today is all we have?
And somehow, without being dramatic, without being heavy, it leaves you lighter.
'Kal Ho Naa Ho' is an amazing combination of modern contemporary music that the trio, Shankar Ehsaan Loy are known for, and the kind of song that is expected from Dharma Productions. Like Javed Akhtar says, “the tune had something very ethereal, spiritual, real, honest about it.”
Sonu Nigam is in Nepal, shooting for his film, Love in Nepal, when he gets a call from Karan Johar. He wants him to sing the title track of his movie Kal Ho Naa Ho. Sonu tells him he won't be back in the country for another month and a half. Karan replies that he will wait.
Sonu's reaction when he first hears the song is - “wow.” He falls in love with it right away. It is neither a romantic song nor a sad number. Rather, it is a soulful song, an abstract song with a feel to it. Sonu has often spoken about approaching the song with a certain restraint, almost in the tradition of Mukesh – letting emotion flow without over-singing it.
The haunting opening “Har ghadi badal rahi hai roop zindagi,” doesn’t just begin the song, it sets its entire emotional tone.

Even though it has only two antaras, the lyrics are extremely profound. In just a handful of words Javed Saheb conveys the entire philosophy of life. Har pal yahaan jee bhar jiyo… jo hai samaa, kal ho naa ho. (Live each moment to the fullest, for tomorrow may never come).
And that really is the soul of the song.
In just one simple line, Javed Akhtar distils a philosophy most of us spend a lifetime trying to understand – to be present, to live fully, and to not take a single moment for granted.
In Kal Ho Naa Ho, the song is brought to life on screen by Shah Rukh Khan. With him, smiling through unspoken pain, the song finds a face that matches its quiet strength.
The first time Sonu sings the song, it doesn't sound quite right. Perhaps it's because he's working with Nikhil Advani for the first time and is not able to express what Nikhil wants him to manifest.
The next time Sonu goes for the recording, he tells Karan to let him do it his way. Karan Johar agrees. The song is recorded for the second time. This time it takes Sonu just ten minutes. He sings it the way he deems fit, keeping everyone's ideas in mind. The result is a song that gets him his first National Film Award as well as the IIFA, Filmfare, Apsara and Bollywood Music Awards for the Best Playback Singer, Male.
Over the years, the song finds its way into countless personal playlists, farewell moments, and introspective nights – becoming deeply personal to listeners across generations.
"Karan could have let Shankar sing the song but he put his foot down and wanted just me for it. I will always owe it to Karan for that eternal song," says Sonu. In a more recent interview he says – “I believe every piece of art has its own destiny. I was meant to sing the biggest song in the history of Indian film music, going by what Karan told me... and I can only thank God that the most loved song of all times came to me.”
Years later, ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ still doesn’t feel like a song tied to a film or a moment in time. It feels… timeless.
It plays at concerts, at quiet evenings, in headphones during long walks, and somehow, it always lands exactly where it needs to. Not louder, not softer. Just right.
That is the magic of this composition. The honesty of Javed Akhtar’s words, the haunting melody of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and a voice that doesn’t perform the song but lives it – Sonu Nigam.
Because long after the film fades, long after the story ends, the song remains… gently reminding us – har pal yahaan jee bhar jiyo… jo hai samaa, kal ho naa ho.
