Hindus worship a number of gods. But whether it be a festival, ceremony or ritual, whether it marks the start of a new business, a new school, or, in fact, anything new - the first God they worship is Ganesh.
From this week onwards, we will be taking a peek at some of Sonu Nigam's songs. And what better way to start this journey, than with Ganesh's 'Mahamoolmantra?'

Sonu has sung numerous Ganesh bhajans in both Hindi and Marathi, my personal favourite being 'Mahamoolmantra.' This sacred track is part of the Maha Ganesha album, which was released at the famous Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai in 2008. Those who follow Sonu will fondly remember the sight of an adorable baby bundled in saffron, at the album's launch. In fact, ever since Nevaan was born, Sonu's family has been bringing Ganpati home every year during Ganesh Utsav.
The Maha Ganesha album, composed by Anand Kurhekar, with lyrics written by Hemant Rajopadhyay, includes other devotional tracks such as 'Sharanam Prapadye' and 'Ganesh Kavach.'
In Hindu traditions, mantras are not just words but powerful vibrations that connect devotees to the divine. 'Mahamoolmantra' is considered especially sacred as it invokes Lord Ganesh, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of wisdom and success. The resonance of this Ganesh mantra is believed to purify the mind, instill inner peace and create an aura of positivity.
'Mahamoolmantra' is so pristine, its rendition so sublime, with all the right pauses and stillness - so serene is the atmosphere it evokes - that there can be no better way to start your day, than by listening to this piece of divinity first thing in the morning.
"I have come to understand that God is not confined to Islam or Hinduism or Christianity. God is not confined to a place, to a mood. It is us." - Sonu Nigam
Keep smiling friends. Life is beautiful. Cherish each moment.
