Year of release: 2012
Film: Agneepath
Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya
Composer: Ajay-Atul
Sonu attempts to sing the song but falters. The climax is too high and his throat is sore. He tells Ajay-Atul, the composers, he will sing it later, when his throat is better.
Next night his throat is fine. But Ajay and Atul are busy in a cello jamming session. Sonu says he'll wait. They warn it could be very late before they finish. Besides, they do not wish to record that night as their ears are numb from all the composing and dubbing they've been doing all day.
But Sonu insists on waiting. Every few minutes, Ajay-Atul whisper guiltily that Sonu is waiting outside. Sonu tells them to focus on their work and stop worrying about him. He's fine.
So, like a struggler, he waits outside for two and a half hours, listening to the song on loop, again and again and again, till it seeps into his blood and becomes a part of his inner being, his very soul.
No, this isn't 1991, his struggling days. This is 2011. Twenty years hence.
And the song in question is - 'Abhi Mujh Mein Kaheen.'
He has sung thousands of songs by now. Yet, like a novice, he listens to this song on a loop, for two and a half hours... It is this attitude, this dedication, this desire to give every single song the best he can, that makes him one of the finest and most sought after singers in Bollywood.
Then, around 2.30 am, the song gets recorded, in a mere forty-five minutes.
“I wanted a song which would consolidate my singing prowess,” says Sonu. “This song has come from a space which is so divine that people will never get over this song. Agneepath is a song I truly deserved and needed in my life. Thanks to Ajay-Atul, they've done such a beautiful job composing this song.”
On screen, the song plays over one of Agneepath’s most poignant moments – Vijay (played by Hrithik Roshan), finally meets his sister Shiksha after years apart. Sonu’s singing mirrors that emotional weight perfectly, making the moment even more powerful.

There is another reason why this song is close to Sonu's heart. “'Abhi Mujh Mein Kaheen,' came into my life when my mother was passing away. So I think that was my mother's bye-bye gift to me.”
At a concert in Sri Lanka, an emotional Sonu further adds - “This is a very special song for me. This was the last song that she heard of mine, become such a global hit. And then in 2013, she became one with the Almighty. So when I came to Sri Lanka this time, as I came out of the airport, I had memories of my mother, coming out with me, my little short cute mother. I always dedicate this song to my most beautiful prized possession, which I had, which I lost. So presenting my prayer, Agnipath...”
As per singer, anchor and RJ, Mihir Joshi, “This song and 'Sapna Jahaan' are possibly two of the best songs he's ever sung. I really hope he gets to do more songs with Ajay-Atul because they quite obviously bring out the best in him.”
In a conversation with the lyricist of this song, Amitabh Bhattacharya, he further adds - “When I saw him singing it live... I had goosebumps... He performed the entire song in silhouette. And you could see that he was crying... you could see him sobbing. But the moment he's singing, that emotion, that sobbing is not there. Perfect. I was blown away by the virtuosity of him as a performer.”
'Abhi Mujh Mein Kaheen' goes on to sweep multiple honours. It wins Song of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year (Sonu Nigam), and Music Composer of the Year (Ajay–Atul) at the Mirchi Music Awards 2012, and is later crowned Song of the Decade in 2021. It also earns Sonu the Best Playback Singer (Male) award at both the Zee Cine and IIFA Awards, while Amitabh Bhattacharya takes home the IIFA for Best Lyrics. Such recognition only underlines what listeners already know – this is not just a song, but a milestone in Bollywood music.
What surprises one is the fact that this song is not promoted at all. Yet it becomes huge. “This song was not promoted by the film; it wasn’t lip-synced, and they didn’t even have a proper music video for it. It caught on by sheer word of mouth.”
This scintillating number, which is uplifting and heart-breaking at the same time, is one of the finest songs sung by this ace singer and gains him a lot of respect.
According to him, this one song alone is equivalent to all the songs he has ever sung, put together. “'Abhi Mujh Mein Kaheen' is the first song where I have seen people cry and give a standing ovation.”
Despite being released over a decade ago, it remains one of the most streamed and most loved songs of 2012 — a modern classic that continues to resonate with listeners even today.
Keep smiling friends. Life is beautiful. Cherish each moment.
